Patrick Tuipulotu Facing Lengthy Recovery from Shoulder Injury

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

New Zealand's lock, Patrick Tuipulotu, is set to be out of action until May as he recovers from a significant shoulder injury that sidelined him during the All Blacks’ concluding tour. The seasoned 56-test player suffered a complicated AC (acromioclavicular) joint injury, necessitating an early and extensive rehabilitation process.

Tuipulotu’s absence will delay his participation in the Auckland Blues’ Super Rugby season. Addressing local press while his right arm was in a sling, he candidly spoke about the severity of the injury.

He shared that his shoulder “looked like it was hanging off,” due to the severe protrusion of the AC joint. Following this, doctors recommended immediate surgery along with strict recovery protocols to ensure proper healing. “The surgeon is extremely meticulous about it,” remarked the 32-year-old. “I’m equally focused on getting it right.”

This setback adds to an already challenging year for Tuipulotu, who previously faced six weeks on the sidelines after a facial fracture sustained in the Rugby Championship. Concerns about his workload have emerged, but the Blues remain optimistic about his strong return post-rehabilitation.

On a brighter note, All Blacks prop Ofa Tu’uungafasi is reportedly on a better path leading into the 2025 Super Rugby season. The 33-year-old underwent surgery to remove bone spurs from his neck, an issue resulting from chronic wear and tear rather than an individual on-field incident. Tu’uungafasi expressed gratitude that the condition wasn’t caused by a tackle or scrum and is hopeful to be fit for the February season opener.

Both athletes hold vital roles in New Zealand rugby, and fans will be closely monitoring their recoveries ahead of an upcoming intense 2025 Super Rugby season. With Tuipulotu targeting a May comeback and Tu’uungafasi eyeing early season involvement, the Blues anticipate a more robust squad as the competition unfolds.
