Tri-Nation T20 Series Relocated to Rawalpindi for Enhanced Security

Tri-Nation T20 Series Relocated to Rawalpindi for Enhanced Security

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed on Thursday that the upcoming tri-nation T20 international series featuring Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe will now exclusively occur in Rawalpindi. The tournament is set to commence on November 18, culminating in the final match on November 29.

This decision follows a tragic suicide bombing in Islamabad this week that claimed 12 lives, raising significant safety issues among visiting teams. Initially, five matches were arranged to be hosted in Lahore, but in response to security evaluations, the PCB has decided to consolidate the series in Rawalpindi for operational safety.

In a formal statement, the PCB noted that the revised schedule was established “after collaborative discussions with Sri Lanka Cricket and Zimbabwe Cricket to meet both operational demands and match necessities.” This series is seen as an essential preparatory event leading up to next year’s T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

The tri-series will follow the ongoing one-day international (ODI) matches between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, with the final two ODIs taking place in Rawalpindi on Friday and Sunday. Relocating to a single venue is expected to minimize logistical issues and improve player security.

This decision comes in light of concerns from several Sri Lankan players who expressed a desire to return home following the bombing in Islamabad. However, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board instructed all players and staff to remain in Pakistan and continue with the tour as planned, cautioning that those who opted to leave might face disciplinary measures.

Rawalpindi and Islamabad are neighboring cities, situated just 20 kilometers apart, indicating that the security conditions in one impact the other. Despite the recent attack, the PCB has assured all teams of robust security arrangements throughout the tournament.

Pakistan’s capacity to host international cricket matches has historically faced challenges due to security issues. A notorious incident in 2009 involved an attack on a bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, leading to injuries among players and officials. Consequently, Pakistan had to host its “home” matches in the United Arab Emirates for several years.

Recently, though, Pakistan has mended its reputation as a safe haven for international matches. Improvements in security across major cities and a return to hosting test cricket—highlighted by Sri Lanka’s tour in 2019—have encouraged more international teams to come back.

The PCB also confirmed that Afghanistan, originally set to participate in the tri-series, withdrew last month following the tragic deaths of three Afghan cricketers in Paktika province, attributed to military strikes. Zimbabwe was then invited to fill the vacancy, completing the tri-nation format.

The series is anticipated to exhibit several pivotal matches among the three nations, providing vital preparation for the impending T20 World Cup. Cricket analysts believe this series will offer teams a key chance to assess their line-ups, adjust their bowling and batting strategies, and generate momentum for the global stage.

PCB officials expressed optimism for a smooth series despite the recent challenges. They expressed gratitude to both Sri Lanka Cricket and Zimbabwe Cricket for their cooperation and understanding, emphasizing their joint commitment to nourishing international cricket in Pakistan.

The concluding match of the tri-nation series is scheduled to take place on November 29, marking the end of a pivotal cricket month for Pakistan and symbolizing the nation’s resilience and ongoing efforts to regain full hosting rights for international cricket post-setbacks.
