Sharjah, UAE – His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah (UOS), chaired the Board of Trustees' 60th meeting at his campus office.
His Highness opened the session by welcoming the board members and commending the university's advancements in academic and research areas. He emphasized the importance of these achievements in enhancing UOS's stature globally across various academic disciplines.
Enhancements in Academic and Program Development
He praised UOS's commitment to maintaining high academic quality by continuously upgrading infrastructure and academic offerings. The focus is on ensuring that courses align with global trends, technological advancements, and the evolving needs of the job market, particularly for the younger generation.
Graduation Approval
The Board sanctioned the graduation of 1,607 students completing their studies by the conclusion of the Summer Semester 2024–2025 and Fall Semester 2025–2026. The graduating students include:
1,213 Bachelor’s degree recipients
4 Postgraduate diploma awardees
314 Master’s degree holders
76 Doctoral graduates
New Programs Announced
To address the demands of the future workforce and rapid technological advancements, the Board has approved several new offerings. These include:
PhD in Artificial Intelligence
PhD in Digital Transformation
Doctorate Residency in Dentistry
MSc in Artificial Intelligence for Biomedical Applications and Healthcare
BSc in Artificial Intelligence
MSc in Quantum Science and Technology
Establishment of New Centers
The meeting saw the approval for the establishment of a Center for Artificial Intelligence Applications, aimed at fostering applied research and practical integration of AI in education and scientific sectors.
Furthermore, a Strategic Partnerships Office was greenlit, tasked with enhancing collaborations with both local and international entities, aligning them with the university's overarching goals.
Administrative and Academic Reforms
Several key reforms were endorsed, including:
Reducing the duration of the Bachelor’s program in Oral and Dental Medicine and Surgery to five years
Revisions to the General Education Programme
Implementation of a revised governance and organisational structure to promote transparency and enhance decision-making processes
Focus on Research and Institutional Development
Reports reviewed by the Board members included:
Scientific research and development strategies
Progress on new research centers
National and international recognition and accreditations
The Board also discussed the updated University Strategy 2024–2030 (EDGE), which focuses on:
Increasing Emiratisation in various academic and administrative roles
Promoting digital transformation efforts
Enhancing regional and international partnerships
Encouraging innovation and entrepreneurial spirit among students
Faculty Promotions
The Board approved the advancement of 21 faculty members, which includes:
11 being promoted to the rank of Professor
10 advancing to Associate Professor positions
Additionally, reviews on external evaluations, internal audits, risk management, and Emiratisation efforts were discussed.
Overview of University Performance
Chancellor Professor Dr. Esameldin Agamy provided a comprehensive report on institutional performance, strategic development, infrastructure enhancement, community engagement, and local as well as international collaborations.
Attendance and Representation
The meeting also featured participation from senior officials and academic leaders both within the UAE and internationally, including delegates from prestigious institutions such as the University of Ottawa, MIT, Stanford University, National University of Singapore, University of Malaya, McMaster University, University of Leicester, and Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology.
