Abhishek Sharma kicked off 2026 with an outstanding performance, scoring a blazing 84 runs from just 35 deliveries, propelling India to a commanding position in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand. Building on his remarkable T20 form in 2025, Sharma launched eight sixes during his innings, helping India to 238/7, their highest-ever T20I score against New Zealand. In response, New Zealand fell short by 48 runs.
Despite losing two early wickets, with Kyle Jamieson and Jacob Duffy taking down Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, Sharma remained steady, launching four sixes in the powerplay that led India to 68/2 after six overs. Suryakumar Yadav supported him aggressively, executing his signature shots. Sharma reached his half-century in a mere 20 balls, forming a crucial 99-run partnership for the third wicket before Yadav was dismissed.
Continuing his onslaught, Sharma hit two more sixes before misplaying one in the next over. India's momentum stayed strong, even with eight overs to go. Shivam Dube struck an impressive six, and Hardik Pandya contributed 25 runs off 16 balls. Rinku Singh capped off the innings strongly, remaining not out with 44 runs after hitting two sixes and two fours against Daryl Mitchell.
As they chased 239 runs, New Zealand was quickly in trouble with Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra falling in the second over. Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman attempted to stabilize the innings with important boundaries, but Varun Chakaravarthy struck with a wicket after the powerplay, sending Tim Robinson back to the pavilion.
Phillips made a valiant 78 runs off 40 balls, but consistent wickets kept New Zealand under pressure. Chakaravarthy added to their woes by dismissing Chapman, while Santner and Mitchell could only slightly decrease the margin of defeat. India secured a comfortable win by 48 runs in the first T20I.
