New Zealand claimed a strong five-wicket win over England in the second One-Day International at Seddon Park in Hamilton. The victory gave the Black Caps an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series with one game remaining. The home side bowled out England for 175 in just over 35 overs before chasing down the target comfortably, led by Daryl Mitchell’s unbeaten half-century and a brilliant bowling performance from Blair Tickner.
Blair Tickner, who joined the squad as a late replacement for the injured Kyle Jamieson, made a stunning comeback to international cricket. The 32-year-old fast bowler got his first ODI start since May 2023 after Matt Henry was ruled out just before the match. Tickner immediately made an impact by dismissing former England captain Joe Root for 25, caught down the leg side. He went on to dismantle England’s lower order, finishing with figures of 4 for 34 — his best performance in ODI cricket.
England’s batting lineup failed to find stability after losing early wickets. Opener Harry Brook looked in good touch with a quick 34 off 34 balls, but he fell to spinner Mitchell Santner, halting any momentum the tourists tried to build. Jamie Overton provided a late spark with a fast 42 from 28 balls but was caught trying to clear the boundary. The rest of the batting lineup failed to contribute significantly, leaving England all out for 175.
For England, Jofra Archer was the standout performer with the ball. Returning to international action, Archer bowled with pace and accuracy, taking 3 wickets for just 23 runs. He trapped opener Will Young for a duck early in New Zealand’s innings and made the hosts work hard during the chase. However, his efforts could not prevent New Zealand from completing the win comfortably.
New Zealand’s chase got off to a shaky start, with Archer’s early strikes creating pressure. Kane Williamson managed 21 runs from 39 balls before being bowled by Jamie Overton. That brought Daryl Mitchell to the crease, joining Rachin Ravindra with 134 runs still needed for victory. The pair steadied the innings with a confident partnership, playing calmly against England’s attack. Ravindra reached a fluent 54 before being caught at deep fine leg, but Mitchell continued to guide the team with maturity.
After a few quick wickets, including Tom Latham and Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner joined Mitchell at the crease. The duo ensured there were no further hiccups in the chase. Santner played positively for his unbeaten 34, supporting Mitchell, who finished on 56 not out. New Zealand reached the target in the 34th over, sealing victory with a boundary from Mitchell.
The win reflected a complete team performance from New Zealand. The bowlers set the tone early, led by Tickner’s four-wicket haul and Santner’s economical spin. The batters, especially Mitchell and Ravindra, handled England’s pace attack with composure. For the second game in a row, Daryl Mitchell played the role of match-winner, proving to be the difference between the two sides.
For England, the defeat marks another disappointing outing in the series. Despite Archer’s impressive return, the lack of partnerships and middle-order consistency cost them once again. They will now look to regroup and end the series on a high in the final match, while New Zealand will aim for a clean sweep at home.
