Vanderbilt Aims for Third Consecutive Win with Strong 3-Point Performance

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Vanderbilt's head coach, Mark Byington, emphasizes that he does not want the team to rely solely on long-range shots to secure victories. Nonetheless, the opening games have demonstrated the potency of their outside shooting. The Commodores, with a 2-0 record, already made headlines by hitting 17 three-pointers against Lipscomb and secured another 14 versus UCF.

This early success positions Vanderbilt as one of the season’s most formidable teams in 3-point shooting. With confidence soaring, the Commodores look to face Eastern Kentucky (1-1) on Wednesday night in Nashville, Tennessee. While the 3-point strategy remains a part of their game plan, Byington insists on smart play that adapts to the game situation.

“We discuss playing the right way, focusing on what the game offers us,” Byington stated. “When our passes connect well, we have players who can convert those opportunities.” The Commodores have adhered to this philosophy, scoring an impressive 105 points in both games—a milestone not reached by the program since 1980. It marks the first instance of Vanderbilt scoring over 100 points in both initial games of a season.

Additionally, defense has bolstered their efforts; against UCF, they forced 12 turnovers leading to 20 points while permitting only two from their own mistakes. This combination of offensive effectiveness and defensive resilience has fostered early confidence as they approach tougher contests.

Senior Tyler Nickel has emerged as a vital player, averaging 18.5 points per game. “We’ve done well sharing the ball, fostering trust among teammates,” Nickel noted. This collaborative spirit bodes well for their future in conference play and potential postseason action.

Nickel is supported by other key players, including sophomore guard Tyler Tanner with an average of 17.5 points, graduate student Duke Miles at 15 points, and Tyler Harris contributing 14.5. Their scoring versatility indicates Vanderbilt's reliance on team efforts, highlighting the significance of their collective gameplay.

The Commodores have converted 31 of 67 3-point attempts, yielding a remarkable 46% success rate, positioning them among the elite in college basketball for shooting efficiency. Their swift passing and confident shooting create challenges for opposing teams.

Vanderbilt's upcoming adversary, Eastern Kentucky, also possesses a dynamic offense, averaging 100.5 points per game and making 25 of 68 three-point attempts. They enter this matchup seeking to rebound from a recent 89-79 defeat against Western Kentucky.

Leading Eastern Kentucky is forward Austin Ball, averaging 16.5 points per game. The sophomore, who transferred from George Mason, has quickly become integral to the Colonels’ attack. Graduate student Montavious Myrick adds another 16 points, and transfer forward Jalen Cooper from Cal State Fullerton contributes 14.5 points.

Both teams are known for their high-paced, offensive styles, setting the stage for a thrilling, high-scoring match on Wednesday night. Vanderbilt aims to maintain its perfect start while Eastern Kentucky looks to disrupt their momentum and gain traction following their recent loss.

Focusing on a team-based methodology, Coach Byington's commitment to unselfish play has provided Vanderbilt a favorable start this season. If they continue to execute offense efficiently while holding steady on defense, they could emerge as one of the league's most thrilling teams in 2023.

Nashville fans are eagerly anticipating whether the Commodores can attain another 100-point game and achieve their third consecutive victory in style.
