Danish Badminton Star Viktor Axelsen Retires Amid Injury Struggles

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Danish badminton superstar Viktor Axelsen, who has made Dubai his base, has announced his retirement from professional badminton, concluding a celebrated career marked by numerous achievements. At the age of 32, he cited chronic back issues as the driving force behind his decision, expressing his inability to compete at a top level.

Axelsen, who earned gold medals at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympics, disclosed that despite having undergone back surgery in April of last year, recovery eluded him.

“Coming to terms with this reality has been a profound challenge; however, I have reached a stage where my body simply cannot keep up,” Axelsen conveyed in a heartfelt announcement.

Regarded as one of the sport’s all-time greats, Axelsen leaves an impressive legacy, which includes two World Championship titles and a bronze medal from the Rio 2016 Olympics. His reign was punctuated by over 100 consecutive weeks atop the world rankings, a record that stands just behind Malaysian legend Lee Chong Wei.

Standing tall at 194 cm, Axelsen transformed modern badminton through his athleticism and strategic acumen. His global reach was also notable, with his fluency in Mandarin reinforcing his bond with fans across the world.

Since relocating to Dubai in August 2021, Axelsen trained at the Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex, a move influenced by various factors, including shorter travel to Asian competitions and access to premium training facilities.

Health considerations played a significant role in his relocation, as Axelsen grapples with asthma and severe rhinitis, conditions that thrive in warmer climates compared to the colder environments in Europe.

Reflecting on his illustrious journey, Axelsen remarked that he has “achieved everything” he set out to do. “This sport has consumed my life; I have spared no effort in pursuing my dreams,” he stated.

His retirement signifies the conclusion of a noteworthy era in international badminton, with Axelsen being celebrated not just for his accolades but for his role in elevating the sport’s profile globally.
