Yu Zide, 13, Shatters 200m Medley Asian Record at National Games

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

In an exhilarating display of talent, 13-year-old Yu Zide from China set a new Asian record in the 200-meter individual medley during the National Games held in Shenzhen. Her exceptional performance secured her the gold medal, making this the first Asian record of her promising career. Yu completed the race in an impressive 2 minutes 07.41 seconds, eclipsing the prior record of 2:07.57 held by fellow Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen, who set it during the London 2012 Olympics at age 16.

Yu's victory was particularly notable as she finished nearly a second ahead of her nearest competitor, Yu Yiting, the reigning champion from the 2022 Asian Games. Despite her tender age, Yu displayed the skill and confidence of a seasoned athlete, demonstrating remarkable pacing and a powerful final stroke, thrilling the audience in Shenzhen.

The record broken by Yu had remained unchallenged for over ten years, being a prestigious milestone in Asian swimming history. Ye Shiwen, an Olympic champion at 16, has inspired many young swimmers, and now Yu Zide is poised to continue that legacy as a rising star in international sports.

Having gained recognition in swim circles after nearly qualifying for the Paris Olympics last year at just 11, Yu's impressive performances during Olympic qualifiers grabbed the attention of both domestic and international sports fans. Although she narrowly missed the Olympic spot, her aptitude has not gone unnoticed, with coaches and supporters closely watching her advancement.

In May 2025, she showcased her range by clinching two gold medals in both the 400m individual medley and 200m butterfly at national contests, additionally earning a second place in the 200m individual medley that would qualify her for the World Championships in Singapore. There, she became the youngest medalist as part of the Chinese 4x200m freestyle relay team, bringing home a bronze.

During the same championships, Yu achieved fourth place in her individual races—the 200m and 400m individual medley and the 200m butterfly—solidifying her status among the world's top young swimmers and proving she can compete on the world stage despite her youth.

Representing Hebei Province, renowned for nurturing elite athletes across various sports, Yu's accomplishments have not only brought pride to her region but have also inspired many young swimmers. Officials in Hebei celebrated her disciplined approach to competition, recognizing her ability to handle pressure effectively.

Following her record-setting performance in the 200m individual medley, Yu is now gearing up for the 200m butterfly heats slated for Thursday, aiming to secure yet another gold medal at the National Games, a pivotal sporting event held every four years in China.

Her coach characterized her as a "once-in-a-generation talent," praising her dedication to training. "Each day, she practices with fervor and attention, and even at such a young age, she's adept at race strategies and consistently improving her skills. Today's results are a testament to her perseverance," the coach remarked.

Experts in sports believe that Yu Zide’s groundbreaking record might herald the dawn of a lengthy and illustrious career. Combining speed, resilience, and an unshakeable demeanor under duress, she is expected to become one of China's preeminent swimmers in the near future. Should she maintain her current trajectory, Yu could emerge as a significant contender at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, where she would still be just 16—a coincidence mirroring Ye Shiwen's age when she secured gold in 2012.

Yu Zide's record-setting swim at the National Games in Shenzhen has established her among the youngest Asian record holders historically. Her success underscores the robustness of China's youth sports initiatives and spotlights the promising future of Asian swimming. With her eyes now on the 200m butterfly event, fans across China eagerly anticipate whether this 13-year-old prodigy can further elevate her list of accolades.
