A magnitude 3.9 earthquake was recorded in Bhutan on Sunday afternoon, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The seismic event occurred at 2:42 PM Indian Standard Time on November 23, 2025, with its epicenter positioned at latitude 27.36 N and longitude 91.39 E, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The NCS communicated the quake’s details via social media, providing vital information to locals and authorities. This tremor follows a previous earthquake in October, measuring 3.1 in magnitude, underscoring the region's seismic activity.
Bhutan, located in the young Himalayan Mountains, is recognized as one of the globe's most seismically active areas. As per the Indian Seismic Code, the nation lies within high-risk seismic zones IV and V, which amplifies its vulnerability to earthquakes, thus highlighting the necessity for disaster preparedness measures.
Shallow earthquakes, like the recent event, can trigger more intense shaking compared to deeper ones due to their proximity to the surface. Fortunately, there have been no significant reports of damage or injuries stemming from this latest quake.
Besides earthquakes, Bhutan is susceptible to other natural disasters. The impact of climate change has heightened the threat of Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) and other hazards such as windstorms, landslides, and flash floods, all of which have historically resulted in loss and damage.
Government and disaster management agencies in Bhutan are vigilant about monitoring seismic activities to safeguard its residents. This recent earthquake serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of preparedness in this earthquake-prone region.
Locals are advised to remain aware of safety protocols and heed the directives from authorities during emergencies. Applications like the BhooKamp App offer real-time earthquake alerts and essential information to help individuals stay informed.
Ultimately, Bhutan's geographic positioning within the Himalayas ensures that it will continue to encounter seismic challenges and other environmental risks, making disaster readiness and advanced warning systems pivotal in safeguarding lives and properties.
