UAE Unveils National Space Industries Program to Drive Growth and Innovation

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Supreme Space Council, recently presided over a significant session of the UAE Space Council. This meeting concentrated on assessing the UAE’s comprehensive strategy for advancing its space sector.

The strategic framework is anchored in three primary objectives. Firstly, the UAE seeks to emerge as a pivotal global center with a dynamic, investment-conducive space environment. Secondly, the goal is to position the Emirates at the forefront of international space collaborations while enhancing access to worldwide markets. Lastly, the plan includes the construction of state-of-the-art space facilities that adhere to the highest international benchmarks.

During the session, Sheikh Hamdan evaluated insights from the Space Economic Survey, which underscored the remarkable expansion within the sector over the last five years. Furthermore, he inaugurated the National Space Industries Programme, designed to enhance the competitive edge of the UAE’s space domain and support both local and foreign enterprises operating within it.

Sheikh Hamdan highlighted the critical significance of the space domain for the UAE’s trajectory. He noted that it plays an essential role in establishing a knowledge-based economy and fostering innovative technologies and solutions. These advancements are crucial for equipping the nation to handle global challenges and maintaining its competitive stance.

He stressed that investment in the space sector is vital for fast-tracking the growth of the UAE’s space enterprises, enhancing their status in regional and global contexts. Sheikh Hamdan also pointed out the notable interest from leading international firms, reflecting their confidence in the UAE’s economic landscape, regulatory framework, and cutting-edge infrastructure.

The Crown Prince presented ambitious targets for the future, aiming for a 60% increase in the value of the UAE’s space economy, doubling overall returns, and striving to rank among the top ten space economies globally by 2031. To realize this vision, the UAE plans to double its investments in space infrastructure and increase the presence of national companies in the space sector.

According to the Space Economic Survey, total public and private spending on space surged by 49% over the last five years, reflecting strong commitments to developing a sustainable space environment. Investment in space research and development has skyrocketed nine-fold since 2019, showcasing the UAE's focus on scientific leadership and competitive technological innovation.

The survey further emphasized progress in empowering Emirati women in the space sector, noting a 51% growth in the number of female citizens employed in this field compared to the previous year. This underscores the UAE’s dedication to promoting gender equality and recognizing the critical roles women fulfill in forward-thinking industries.

The newly instituted National Space Industries Programme encompasses various initiatives aimed at fostering growth in the space sector. These include economic and investment strategies that provide support for both emerging and established space firms. The programme also extends financial and operational assistance to ensure the competitiveness of these businesses.

Moreover, the initiative strives to facilitate access to local and international markets through specialized channels, enhancing opportunities for companies to engage in national commercial contracts. It also emphasizes knowledge transfer and technology sharing among public and private entities.

In summary, Sheikh Hamdan’s visionary leadership, combined with the UAE’s strategic initiatives, aims to establish the nation as a global powerhouse in the space sector. Through robust investment in infrastructure, corporate support, and a commitment to innovation, the UAE is poised to solidify its space industry role and significantly contribute to its economic advancement and diversification.
