The Sydney Sixers staged a remarkable comeback in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) 2025 after an earlier crushing defeat. They challenged the undefeated Hobart Hurricanes successfully, delivering them their first loss of the season in an exhilarating match filled with tenacity and top performances.
Batting first, the Sixers put together a total of 147 runs over their 20 overs. A significant 75-run partnership between Sophia Dunkley and Ellyse Perry lifted their innings. Dunkley scored 50 runs off 46 balls, striking eight boundaries to lay down a strong foundation. However, the middle and lower order faltered under pressure from the Hurricanes, losing five wickets for a mere four runs. Still, they salvaged a defendable score, setting the stage for a tense chase.
The Hurricanes began their innings confidently, with Ellyse Villani leading with a solid 42 not out. With several wickets in hand and a reasonable target, it appeared victory was within reach for the high-flying side. Yet, it was Ash Gardner’s exceptional bowling display that turned the tide, claiming 4 wickets for 36 runs.
Gardner’s critical impact was felt during her final over. Before this crucial moment, she had given away 34 runs in her previous three overs. As the Hurricanes needed 19 runs off the last three overs with four wickets left, Gardner’s first delivery dismissed Hayley Silver-Holmes, followed by the next ball taking out Molly Strano. Her final ball cleaned up Lauren Smith, caught brilliantly by Dunkley at extra cover, dramatically reducing the Hurricanes' chances.
As only one run was needed, Lauren Cheatle sealed the match for the Sixers by getting Linsey Smith out, wrapping up an exciting 11-run victory with eight balls remaining. This game showcased the Sixers’ fighting spirit and their ability to stay composed under pressure.
The victory not only broke the Hurricanes' unbeaten streak but also underscored the significance of all-round performances in T20 cricket. Dunkley’s batting and Gardner’s phenomenal bowling illustrated how teamwork can prevail over adversity.
Brief scores: Sydney Sixers 147/9 in 20 overs (Sophia Dunkley 50; Heather Graham 4-29) defeated Hobart Hurricanes 136 in 18.4 overs (Ellyse Villani 42*; Ash Gardner 4-36) by 11 runs.
This win keeps Sydney in the race for the WBBL title, proving they can bounce back from tough losses by relying on key players in crucial moments. The Sixers will seek to build on this success in upcoming matches, while the Hurricanes will look to bounce back from their first defeat.
