In preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, France will partake in two notable friendly games in the United States next March, as confirmed by French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo. These matches serve as crucial preparatory encounters ahead of the World Cup scheduled to be held from June 11 to July 19 across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
During the international window from March 23 to 31, Les Bleus are poised to challenge Colombia in Florida and Brazil in Boston. This presents the French team an opportunity to face formidable opponents while acclimatizing to conditions anticipated during the tournament. Diallo expressed, “Nothing has been signed yet, but arrangements are steadily progressing for us to experience American conditions in March against two elite teams. It’s an excellent chance considering the World Cup will be hosted there.”
Diallo underscored the significance of these encounters in light of the World Cup draw. France's seeded status guarantees they won't confront Brazil in the group stage, while Colombia from Pot 2 could emerge as a rival in the tournament. “Brazil is seeded, so we’re assured of not meeting them during group play. Colombia might pose a challenge, so we’ll wait for Didier Deschamps’ input. While we anticipate the draw, our preparations are progressing well,” Diallo remarked.
The official World Cup draw is set for December 5 in Washington D.C. Being seeded provides France a tactical advantage, allowing them to avoid some top opponents early on. These March friendlies will also serve to refine the team's strategy, evaluate player combinations, and enhance match fitness before the main event.
Additionally, Diallo noted plans for two more friendlies in June, likely to be held in France, allowing Didier Deschamps, the national team coach, a farewell with the home crowd. Deschamps, who has led France for a lengthy period, is expected to step down after the World Cup, concluding a remarkable era marked by two World Cup finals appearances.
These preparations are deemed essential as France aims for success in the imminent World Cup. Matches against Brazil and Colombia will provide invaluable insights against top-tier international teams and equip the coaching staff to assess player performance in competitive scenarios.
The announcement reflects a broader strategic plan from Les Bleus’ management to ensure readiness for the extended challenges posed by a tournament spanning three nations. Competing in the U.S. in March will aid the squad in adjusting to travel logistics, differing climates, and stadium settings they will encounter during the World Cup.
Fans and analysts are eagerly anticipating these friendly matchups, showcasing elite players while providing a glimpse of the dynamics to expect during the World Cup. For France, these matches represent an opportunity to refine strategies, assess squad readiness, and gain momentum as they gear up for the pinnacle of football tournaments.
