Toronto’s season concluded in disappointment on Saturday after the Blue Jays were defeated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in an 11-inning contest, leaving supporters across the city to absorb the outcome.
Thirty-year-old web designer Khela Maquiling said the defeat hit her harder than expected. She began following the playoffs to share an interest with her partner and found herself in tears outside a neighbourhood bar. “I just started crying and I shocked myself because I didn’t think I was a sports person until that moment,” she recalled, noting the nightly ritual had gained extra meaning as her partner prepares to move to Switzerland.
In Vancouver, father Guy Felicella described the postseason as a rare shared experience with his sons, Leo, five, and Noah, 11. The family watched every game together, a bonding routine that included Leo staying up through the 16th inning of an 18-inning Game 3 against the Dodgers. Though the loss left the family drained, the boys have since shifted some attention to hockey, while the emotional pull of baseball remains strong.
Longtime fan Cecilia Reyes, 94, has followed the Jays since arriving in Canada in 1973 and remembers the club’s World Series wins in the early 1990s. She watched every playoff game alongside family, celebrating victories and mourning defeats. “When we won, we would cheer and celebrate, and when we lost we were very sad. I reminded my family that games always produce a winner and a loser,” she said. Reyes intends to keep supporting sports and will look forward to spring training.
Across generations, the Blue Jays’ postseason brought excitement and shared memories. Even in defeat, many fans remain hopeful and already looking ahead to next season.
