Zohran Mamdani, an Indian-origin politician, has been elected mayor of New York City, becoming the first Muslim and first mayor of South Asian descent, as well as the first New York mayor born in Africa. At 34, he will be the youngest mayor in the city in over a century when he takes office on January 1, 2026.
The result followed a hard-fought campaign in which Mamdani beat former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. More than two million residents voted, producing the largest mayoral turnout seen in more than fifty years.
A self-described democratic socialist, Mamdani celebrated the win alongside his wife, artist Rama Duwaji, his mother, filmmaker Mira Nair, and his father, academic Mahmood Mamdani. The event took on a Bollywood note when the popular track "Dhoom Machale" from the 2004 film Dhoom played during the festivities.
In his address to supporters, Mamdani spoke openly about his background and political stance, saying he is young, Muslim and a democratic socialist, and that he would not apologise for those identities. He described the vote as a clear call for change and referenced Jawaharlal Nehru's sentiment about moving from the old into the new to underline the moment's significance.
Mamdani also highlighted the central role immigrants play in New York's life, noting the city remains "powered by immigrants and led by an immigrant." He pledged to resist concentrated power and authoritarian tendencies and urged broader civic participation and inclusive governance.
Alongside the mayoral outcome, the Democratic Party recorded wins in key gubernatorial contests in Virginia and New Jersey, results that some analysts view as momentum ahead of next year’s congressional midterms.
The election marks a notable shift for New York politics, reflecting both greater diversity in leadership and the rising influence of younger, progressive voices shaping the city's direction.
