Orcas in Mexican Waters Target Juvenile Great White Sharks, Study Shows

Post by : Samir Qureshi

A team of marine scientists working in Mexican waters has recorded a rare case of orcas preying on juvenile great white sharks, providing new evidence of complex hunting behaviour. The results, published in Frontiers in Marine Science, are the first confirmed records of this tactic in Mexico.

Drone and underwater camera footage from 2020 to 2022 documents orcas operating in coordinated groups to flip young great whites onto their backs. The action induces tonic immobility, a brief paralysis, which allows the orcas to remove and share the sharks’ nutrient-rich livers while leaving most of the bodies behind.

While comparable predation events have been observed off South Africa, Australia and California, these represent the first verified incidents in Mexican seas. Researchers note juvenile sharks appear especially vulnerable and suggest seasonal targeting by orcas could influence local shark numbers over time.

Marine biologists say the findings broaden understanding of orca behaviour and the predator-prey dynamics of marine ecosystems. The observations underline that even apex predators such as great white sharks can be susceptible to the coordinated intelligence of orca pods.

The report adds to mounting evidence that orcas employ strategic, adaptable hunting methods across different environments, highlighting their role as sophisticated oceanic hunters.
