The Phoenix Suns delivered a powerful performance on Sunday night, defeating the previously unbeaten San Antonio Spurs 130–118 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. Devin Booker led the charge for the Suns, recording 28 points and 13 assists, while Grayson Allen added 17 points with five successful 3-pointers. The victory marked the second consecutive win for the Suns, who had earlier struggled through a four-game losing streak.
The Suns started the game with high energy and confidence, shooting efficiently from all areas of the court. By the third quarter, they had built a 31-point lead, showcasing strong teamwork and precise shooting. The team’s passing was exceptional, as they recorded 19 assists on 24 baskets in the first half alone. Their offensive rhythm overwhelmed the Spurs’ defense, and they went into halftime with a commanding 70–52 lead.
The Suns’ three-point accuracy was one of the main highlights of the game. They shot 63.2% in the first half and made 11 of their 15 three-point attempts, creating a gap that San Antonio could not close. By the end of the game, Phoenix had connected on 19 of 33 shots from beyond the arc, finishing with an impressive 57.6% success rate from long distance.
Rising star Victor Wembanyama, who had dominated in the Spurs’ previous five games, faced a tough night against the Suns’ defense. Entering the matchup averaging 30.2 points, 14.6 rebounds, and 4.8 blocks, he was held to just nine points, nine rebounds, four blocks, and six turnovers.
Wembanyama made his first basket only one minute before halftime and failed to score in both the first and third quarters. The Suns’ defensive plan clearly focused on limiting his impact, forcing him into 4-for-14 shooting from the field. His struggles contributed significantly to San Antonio’s inability to mount a strong comeback.
The Spurs attempted to recover from their slow start, showing resilience in the final quarter. Stephon Castle led their offense with a season-high 26 points, followed by Keldon Johnson with 19 points and Harrison Barnes with 13 points. However, their efforts were not enough to overcome Phoenix’s sharp shooting and balanced offense.
San Antonio briefly cut the deficit to 14 points (111–97) after a 12–0 run, capped by Wembanyama’s only three-pointer of the game with just over six minutes left. Yet, the Suns quickly regained control and maintained a comfortable margin until the final minute.
The Spurs shot 45.9% overall and made 10 of 41 three-point attempts, far below their usual efficiency. Their shooting inconsistency, combined with turnovers and defensive lapses, ended their five-game winning streak—the best start in franchise history.
Beyond Booker’s leadership, several Suns players made key contributions. Ryan Dunn scored 17 points, Collin Gillespie added 15 off the bench, and Royce O’Neale finished with 11 points. All three connected on multiple three-pointers, while Jordan Goodwin also hit three from deep.
The Suns’ depth played a vital role in maintaining offensive momentum, even when their starters rested. Despite missing Dillon Brooks (core injury) for the fourth straight game and Jalen Green (hamstring), the team’s bench unit provided stability and scoring support.
Injuries continued to shape the storylines for both teams. The Spurs were without De’Aaron Fox, who missed his sixth consecutive game due to a hamstring issue. Rookie Dylan Harper contributed 12 points before leaving the game with a left calf injury late in the second quarter and did not return.
The Suns, too, had to adjust their lineup due to absences but showed resilience. Despite limited rotation options, their chemistry and shooting accuracy helped them maintain control throughout the game.
With this victory, the Suns improved their record after early-season struggles and gained momentum with back-to-back wins. Their offensive efficiency and teamwork signaled a return to form for a team aiming to compete at the top of the Western Conference.
For the Spurs, the loss serves as a reminder of the challenges that come with relying on young stars like Wembanyama. While the rookie’s potential remains undeniable, his performance against Phoenix showed that defensive adjustments from opponents can disrupt even the most talented players.
The two teams are expected to meet again later in the season, setting up what could be another thrilling matchup as both sides continue to evolve.
