The Miss Universe 2025 competition in Thailand has been overshadowed by controversy after a public confrontation during a pre-show event. What was intended as a pageant celebration turned into a dispute over conduct and respect.
The incident occurred during a sash presentation when Nawat Itsaragrisil, the Miss Universe Thailand director and host, addressed Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch, in a manner many viewers found harsh. A widely shared video shows him ordering her to stand and using insulting language that some audiences interpreted as calling her a "dumbhead." When Fátima attempted to respond, the host interrupted, saying, "I didn’t give you an opportunity to talk."
The exchange visibly unsettled other contestants. After security was summoned as if to remove Fátima, numerous participants reacted with shock. As Fátima left the room, most of the remaining contestants followed, turning the exit into a collective act of protest against the treatment she received.
Outside the venue, Fátima told reporters she respects Thailand and its people but will not accept being publicly humiliated. Her composed statement drew applause at the scene and praise online from many who admired her stance.
Once the walkout footage circulated on social platforms, calls intensified for Nawat to be relieved of his duties. Fans, former contestants and pageant observers demanded a higher standard of behaviour and accountability from those running the event.
Nawat later issued a public apology, saying he had not anticipated the reaction. Nevertheless, a substantial portion of the public and commenters questioned the sincerity of that apology and suggested it came only after widespread criticism.
Some reactions on social media included:
"Are the tears in the room with us?"
"Those look like the driest tears I've seen."
Such responses reflect widespread scepticism about the genuineness of the apology.
The Miss Universe Organization has acknowledged the controversy and is monitoring the fallout. Fátima Bosch has since resumed official pageant activities, and many contestants remain publicly supportive of her.
The episode has prompted broader discussion about how contestants are treated behind the scenes. Pageant organisers often emphasise empowerment, but critics say this incident highlights gaps between those ideals and real behaviour.
Observers say the moment could mark a shift in expectations for respect and professional conduct within pageants. Contestants are increasingly viewed as individuals with agency and voices, not merely participants in a show.
With the Miss Universe 2025 finale still ahead, the contest's narrative has been altered: global audiences are now watching for both on-stage performances and how organisers handle fairness and respect offstage.
