Airlines Pause Cuba Travel Due to Fuel Shortage

Post by : Shweta

Sunwing Vacations along with WestJet Vacations has declared a halt on all trips to Cuba through October 2026, as the island grapples with an escalating fuel crisis affecting travel and tourism.

In a statement released by the companies, it has been confirmed that all flights and vacation packages to Cuba will be canceled from June 20 to October 9. This suspension impacts popular tourist hotspots such as Varadero and Cayo Coco, which attract numerous Canadian visitors.

This decision aligns with Cuba's ongoing battle with significant shortages of gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel. The fuel scarcity has resulted in widespread blackouts and disrupted essential services throughout the nation. Earlier in 2026, several airlines, including Air Canada, experienced reduced or suspended flights owing to inconsistent fuel supplies at Cuban airports.

Travel agencies have stated that the current circumstances have complicated their ability to maintain safe and dependable flight services. Without assured access to aviation fuel, airlines cannot adhere to regular schedules, leading to cancellations and adjustments to travel plans.

Nevertheless, Sunwing Vacations Group confirmed its commitment to offering travel packages to alternative destinations across Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America, with other unaffected beach locations remaining available.

The company anticipates a gradual resumption of services to Cuba later in October, with flights to Varadero and Cayo Coco planned to recommence on October 10, followed by additions of other destinations later in the month.

Travelers who booked trips to Cuba within the suspension period will be reached out to and provided with alternative travel options or adjustments regarding their reservations.

This situation underscores the escalating impacts of Cuba’s energy crisis on its tourism industry, a vital revenue source for the nation. Fuel shortages not only hinder flight operations but have also diminished international arrivals, creating inactivity in numerous tourist areas.

Ultimately, the suspension underscores the significant challenges facing airlines and travelers amidst the ongoing fuel crisis that continues to disrupt operations in the region.
