California GI Dr Pal Manickam Lists Five Foods to Reduce Gut Inflammation

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Many people report persistent bloating, fatigue or a heavy feeling after meals that seem healthy. Physicians attribute this to gut inflammation — irritation of the stomach and intestinal lining — which can slow digestion, lower immunity and cause general discomfort.

Dr Pal Manickam, a gastroenterologist based in California, says modest diet changes can calm the gut. He recently offered practical food recommendations to support digestion that are easy to include in everyday meals.

“Eat Colour, Crunch, and Culture”

Dr Manickam highlights a simple framework:

Colour → Include a range of colourful fruits and vegetables

Crunch → Add nuts, seeds and whole, unprocessed foods

Culture → Choose fermented items such as curd and kefir

He notes these choices help lower gut stress and encourage growth of beneficial bacteria that support digestion.

5 Foods He Recommends
1. Leafy Green Vegetables

Greens like spinach, moringa and kale are easy on the digestive tract.
Dr Manickam compares them to a "cooling blanket" that soothes irritation and helps digestion run more smoothly.

2. Berries

Small fruits such as blueberries, strawberries and amla provide antioxidants.
These compounds reduce inflammation in the gut, and the natural fibres feed beneficial microbes.

3. Turmeric and Black Pepper

Called the "golden duo" by Dr Manickam.
Turmeric contains curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory properties, while black pepper improves curcumin absorption.
He recommends adding them to food or warm water.

4. Fermented Foods

Items like curd, kefir and sauerkraut supply probiotics.
These friendly bacteria help repair the gut lining, support digestion and reduce bloating.

5. Fatty Fish and Flaxseeds

Fish such as salmon or tuna, and plant sources like flaxseeds, are rich in omega-3 fats.
Omega-3s help lower internal inflammation, support heart health and sustain energy levels.

What to Avoid

Dr Manickam advises cutting back on:

Processed food

Too much sugar

Fried snacks

Artificial flavor drinks

These choices can increase gut stress and impede digestion.

Why Gut Health Matters

A healthy gut supports more than digestion; it influences:

Strong immunity

Better energy

Clearer skin

Better mood and sleep

Keeping the gut balanced helps the whole body function better.
