Expert sets out practical steps as Delhi air quality hits hazardous levels

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Delhi’s air quality has plunged to hazardous levels again, with the Air Quality Index far above the safe range. The dense smog is causing coughing, tiredness and breathing difficulties for many residents. Tanisha Bawa, a specialist in hormone and gut health, warns the impact extends beyond the lungs to the heart, hormones, brain and immune system.

Bawa said fine particulate matter (PM2.5) can cross into the bloodstream and trigger inflammation across the body, creating oxidative stress. That invisible damage can show up as fatigue, mood swings, poor concentration and other symptoms. “You cannot build immunity to pollution, but you can build resilience,” she wrote on Instagram on November 5.

To strengthen the body against pollution, Bawa recommends simple steps: eat antioxidant-rich foods, stay well hydrated, support gut health with fermented foods and manage stress. She also advises reducing outdoor exposure when pollution peaks and running air purifiers indoors when possible.

Medical professionals note that prolonged exposure to polluted air raises the risk of cardiovascular disease, asthma, thyroid dysfunction, hormonal imbalance and weaker immunity. Residents are urged to use pollution masks, avoid peak traffic times and keep homes clean to limit dust and smog ingress.

Bawa stressed that consistent, small daily changes—healthy eating, regular hydration and protecting indoor air—can help the body better cope with Delhi’s toxic air.
