ICC Hands Haris Rauf Two-Match Ban After Asia Cup On-Field Gestures

ICC Hands Haris Rauf Two-Match Ban After Asia Cup On-Field Gestures

Post by : Meena Hassan

The International Cricket Council has imposed a two-match suspension on Pakistan fast bowler Haris Rauf after he accrued four demerit points for inappropriate behaviour during the Asia Cup. The sanction follows findings that Rauf made repeated jet-crashing gestures in the final and in another fixture against India, breaching the ICC Code of Conduct.

Reports say Rauf was not informed by the match referee that admitting the breach could have reduced his sanction, and that the demerit points were recorded after the hearing without prior notice to the 31-year-old. The hearing, overseen by ICC match referee Richie Richardson, concluded the gestures violated Article 2.21. In addition to the suspension, Rauf forfeited 30% of his match fee and was assessed two demerit points for each offence.

Other players also faced disciplinary action during the tournament. Pakistan batter Sahibzada Farhan received a reprimand for making an AK-47 gesture after scoring a half-century. From India, Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav were sanctioned as well. Arshdeep Singh was accused of an obscene or insulting gesture but was subsequently cleared and no penalty was applied.

The ICC said the measures reflect its effort to uphold discipline and sportsmanship in international cricket. High-tension matches between India and Pakistan often provoke strong emotions, and the governing body’s penalties are intended to discourage misconduct on the field.

Rauf’s suspension will affect his availability for forthcoming matches, and the four demerit points will remain on his record for two years. During that period any further breaches could lead to additional sanctions, as the ICC continues to monitor player behaviour closely.
