The Archdiocese of Cebu has voiced profound sorrow following the discovery of a deceased woman in her early 30s at the Parish Church of San Fernando Rey in Liloan, northern Cebu, on Friday, October 24. This violent occurrence has led church officials to suspend all public services until the church can be restored to its sacred state.
Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy condemned the act as a “serious violation” of church sanctity. “I decree the temporary closure of the Parish Church of San Fernando Rey, Liloan. All public acts of divine worship are to be suspended until proper canonical procedures ensure reparation for this desecration,” he stated. The Archdiocese reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the sanctity of all places of worship and urged the community to pray for the victim and her family.
Initial reports from CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts indicate the woman was attacked within the church. She was found unconscious around 9:30 a.m., with visible injuries, including a head wound and nasal bleeding, as well as dark marks on her neck, indicating possible strangulation. Witnesses reported seeing her accompanied by a man who was later asked to leave the premises.
Authorities have identified the suspect as an unidentified male last seen wearing a black shirt. Police are encouraging the community to assist in identifying both the victim and the attacker. Anyone with relevant information or missing relatives matching the description is urged to contact Liloan Municipal Police Station at 0998-598-6385.
This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the critical need for safety in public places of worship. The Archdiocese of Cebu's prompt suspension of services underscores the seriousness of the desecration and its commitment to restoring peace and sanctity within the church.
This violent act emphasizes the necessity of protecting sacred spaces. The Archdiocese of Cebu continues to appeal to the faithful to join in prayers, extending solidarity to the victim’s family during this difficult time.
