In a thrilling event at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Santiago, Netherlands' Hetty van de Wouw captured the women's sprint title on Friday, overcoming Japan's Mina Sato in two heats. This victory makes her the second Dutch female athlete to claim this title since Ingrid Haringa in 1991.
The 24-year-old van de Wouw added the sprint gold to her previous team sprint title won with Steffie van der Peet and Kimberly Kalee on Wednesday. “I’m still in disbelief. It’s incredible!” she remarked post-race, reflecting her joy and surprise at achieving this milestone.
Her confidence surged after defeating Olympic champion Ellesse Andrews in the quarterfinals. “When I beat Ellesse, I thought I was on a roll. To be crowned world champion feels surreal,” she expressed.
In another impressive performance, Lorena Wiebes soared to victory in the women's omnium event. After a challenging race where France’s Marion Borras initially led by lapping the field, Wiebes surged ahead in the final sprint to secure her title, completing a triad of world titles in just two weeks, including wins in both the scratch race and the Gravel World Championships.
Wiebes hailed her win as extraordinary, stating, “An omnium is unpredictable, so while I hoped for this, it was still a surprise.” Her buoyant spirit from her strong elimination round fueled her to seize control, culminating in a triumphant finish. “Winning three titles in such a short span caps off a fantastic season,” she added.
The UCI Track Cycling World Championships carry on throughout the weekend, featuring events like the kilometre time trial and keirin, where van de Wouw is poised to compete again. Both athletes are anticipated to go for additional medals, affirming their exemplary form.
Meanwhile, in the men's competitions, Britain's Josh Charlton claimed his debut world title in the Individual Pursuit, edging out Denmark's Rasmus Pedersen, with American Anders Johnson taking third place. Another Brit, Josh Tarling, triumphed in the men's points race, finishing ahead of Peter Moore from the U.S. and France's Clement Petit.
This event highlighted the Netherlands' supremacy in track cycling, especially among female competitors, with van de Wouw and Wiebes exhibiting remarkable prowess, consistency, and dominance, underscoring Dutch talent on the global stage.
