Luka Doncic stole the spotlight with an impressive 49-point performance, including 32 points in the first half, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a 128-110 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves Friday night. Alongside his scoring prowess, Doncic also recorded 11 rebounds and eight assists, helping to establish the Lakers' commanding offense.
Austin Reaves played a vital supporting role, adding 25 points with 11 assists, while Rui Hachimura chipped in 23 points. Deandre Ayton rounded out the balanced scoring with 15 points. The Lakers showcased a remarkable shooting percentage of 59.2%, vastly outmatching the Timberwolves’ 46.6%.
On the Timberwolves’ side, Anthony Edwards led with 31 points, followed by Julius Randle, who netted 26 points and collected nine rebounds. However, Minnesota found it challenging to successfully defend against the Lakers’ offense, particularly in the second quarter, where Los Angeles shot a stunning 64.7% and outscored their opponents by 32 points.
The opening quarter showcased a flurry of points from both teams, with the Timberwolves momentarily leading 40-36, propelled by Edwards’ 14 points. Doncic countered with a significant 23 points in the first quarter, seizing the moment in the absence of LeBron James, who was resting, alongside injured teammates Maxi Kleber and Jaxson Hayes.
Los Angeles concluded the first half on a strong 14-4 run, leading 68-63 at halftime, shooting 60% compared to Minnesota’s 50%.
In the third quarter, the Lakers surged ahead with a 9-4 run, establishing their first double-digit lead at 97-86 thanks to a layup from Reaves. They kept their lead steady, heading into the final quarter with a 108-94 advantage, effectively securing their win.
With just over three minutes left in the game, Doncic had a chance to hit the 50-point mark but missed one of his free throws and did not return to the floor. Yet, his 49-point display marked a strong start for the Lakers this season.
The Lakers exhibited effective teamwork and offensive execution, compensating for missing key players. Meanwhile, the Timberwolves, now holding a 1-1 record on their season-opening road trip, are set to face the Indiana Pacers, reigning Eastern Conference champions, in their home opener on Sunday. Both teams are expected to refine their strategies as the season unfolds.
