Oman Electricity Rises 9% While Water Production Sees Slight Drop

Post by : Mumtaaz Qadiri

Oman’s total electricity production increased significantly by the end of July 2025. The country generated 30,239.3 gigawatt-hours (GWh), which is a 9% rise compared to 27,746.9 GWh during the same period in 2024. This growth reflects the increasing demand for electricity in Oman due to industrial, residential, and commercial needs.

Net Electricity Production Increase

Preliminary statistics from the National Centre for Statistics and Information showed that Oman’s net electricity production rose by 8.7%. This figure includes the electricity purchased by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Net production reached 29,308.6 GWh by the end of July 2025, compared to 26,972.2 GWh during the same period last year. This indicates strong growth in electricity supply across the country.

Factors Behind Electricity Growth

Several factors contributed to this increase in electricity production. Expansion of power plants, improved efficiency in electricity generation, and higher consumption by residential and commercial sectors all played a role. Additionally, increased industrial activity in Oman has boosted the demand for electricity, leading to higher production levels.

Water Production Shows Slight Decrease

In contrast to electricity, Oman’s total water production recorded a small decrease of 0.8% by the end of July 2025. Total water output reached approximately 298.9 million cubic meters, compared to 301.2 million cubic meters during the same period in 2024. While the decrease is minor, it indicates slight changes in water demand and resource management across the country.

Regional Water Production Variations

Water production varied across Oman’s governorates. In Muscat, water production decreased significantly by 8.1%, totaling 122.4 million cubic meters, down from 133.2 million cubic meters last year. This decrease may be due to lower water demand, maintenance of water facilities, or improved water conservation measures.

Increase In Dhofar

By contrast, water production in Dhofar governorate rose by 3%, reaching 43.9 million cubic meters. This increase reflects higher local water needs or improvements in water distribution infrastructure in the region. Other governorates also recorded a total rise of 5.8% in water production compared to last year, helping maintain overall water supply levels despite the decrease in Muscat.

Importance Of Electricity And Water Statistics

Monitoring electricity and water production is vital for Oman’s economic planning and public services. Electricity powers industries, homes, and businesses, while water is essential for daily use, agriculture, and industrial purposes. These statistics help policymakers plan for future demand, manage resources efficiently, and maintain a balance between supply and consumption.

Role Of Power And Water Companies

The Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company play key roles in supplying electricity and water across the country. By purchasing and distributing electricity efficiently, these organizations ensure that homes, businesses, and government institutions have a reliable energy supply. Similarly, water authorities oversee water production and distribution to maintain adequate supply throughout Oman.

Economic Implications

The growth in electricity production indicates a healthy economic environment, as higher energy consumption usually correlates with industrial and commercial activity. Conversely, the slight drop in water production suggests the importance of managing water resources carefully, especially in regions with decreasing output like Muscat. Both trends are essential for Oman’s economic planning and sustainable development.

Governorate-Level Analysis

Examining production at the governorate level helps identify specific needs and trends. Muscat, the capital, showed a decline in water production, which may reflect changes in population behavior, infrastructure maintenance, or water-saving initiatives. Meanwhile, Dhofar’s increase shows that water supply is being adjusted to meet local demand. Understanding these regional variations allows for more precise planning and resource allocation.

Planning For Future Needs

Oman continues to invest in electricity and water infrastructure to meet the growing needs of its population and economy. Expanding power plants, upgrading water treatment facilities, and implementing smart monitoring systems are part of long-term plans. These investments aim to ensure that electricity and water production can meet both current and future demand efficiently.

Environmental Considerations

Increasing electricity production should also consider environmental impacts, such as emissions from power generation and sustainable resource management. Similarly, water production must balance supply with conservation efforts to avoid overuse of limited resources. Oman is working on strategies to maintain growth in electricity and water while protecting natural resources.

By the end of July 2025, Oman achieved notable growth in electricity production, reaching over 30,000 GWh, while water production slightly declined. Governorate-level variations highlight the importance of careful monitoring and planning for both resources. These statistics reflect Oman’s ongoing efforts to maintain reliable electricity and water supply, support economic growth, and manage resources sustainably. Continued investments and efficient management will be key to meeting future needs across all regions of the country.
