His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, opened the 18th World Congress 2025, titled “We Are Inclusion.” This major event is hosted in Sharjah for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa and is organized by the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) at Expo Centre Sharjah.
Wide Global Participation
The congress brings together 152 speakers, including experts, self-advocates, and representatives from 74 countries and 160 organisations. Attendees will participate in 59 dialogue sessions. The event enjoys strong support from local and international organisations and is part of Inclusion International’s global series held every four years in different countries.
Inspiring Opening Ceremony
During the opening, H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi and guests watched a visual presentation highlighting achievements of individuals from rehabilitation centers. The presentation showcased the skills and dreams of people with disabilities in fields like engineering, arts, and sports, made possible through inclusive policies and empowerment programs.
Support From Leadership
Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of SCHS, thanked H.H. the Ruler of Sharjah for his consistent support of humanitarian initiatives. She noted that his guidance has been key to advancing inclusion and improving the lives of people with disabilities in the Emirate.

Sheikha Jameela emphasized the importance of inclusion as a core value, not just an idea. She said the congress unites advocates, families, policymakers, and community members to create meaningful change and promote equity worldwide.

The Chairperson highlighted SCHS’s work over four decades, focusing on empowering people with disabilities and defending their rights. She noted that Sharjah has set a global example for cities that prioritize accessibility and dignity for all individuals.
Self-Advocacy Initiatives
Since adopting the concept of self-advocacy in 2009, SCHS has organized numerous conferences and seminars to enhance the abilities of self-advocates. Families are also encouraged to actively participate in supporting their children’s rights and development. The congress continues this mission by providing sessions for sharing experiences and learning from experts worldwide.
Collaboration With Inclusion International
Sheikha Jameela thanked Inclusion International, a global organisation dedicated to advocating for the rights of people with intellectual disabilities for over 60 years. She highlighted the importance of working together to promote self-advocacy, empowerment, and social integration.
Raising Awareness And Advancing Services
The congress focuses on educating self-advocates about their rights, helping them express themselves and seek support. It also promotes awareness in schools, workplaces, and communities about the need for integration, accessible information, and inclusive environments.

Sue Swenson, President of Inclusion International, praised Sharjah’s efforts to support people with disabilities. She highlighted the congress’s global agenda, which aims to create better opportunities and environments for individuals with disabilities, while encouraging young advocates to share ideas and experiences.
Regional Support And Leadership
Hashem Taqi, President of Inclusion for the Middle East and North Africa, commended Sharjah’s initiative, emphasizing self-advocates’ and families’ rights. He highlighted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, focusing on equality, non-discrimination, independent living, and employment opportunities.
Showcasing Skills And Abilities
The congress featured sessions and activities demonstrating the potential and achievements of individuals with disabilities. These discussions celebrated resilience, promoted integration, and encouraged empowerment within society.
Role Of Sports In Inclusion
Sheikh Mohammed bin Duaij Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Paralympic Committee, spoke about the role of sports in integrating people with intellectual disabilities. He highlighted how physical activity benefits both individuals and their families by improving coordination, mental health, and overall well-being.
Regional Recognition And Initiatives
Prince Mired bin Raad bin Yazid Al Hashemi, President of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Jordan, praised the congress for advancing rights and freedoms, particularly in Arab countries. He highlighted Jordan’s national initiatives for housing, education, independent living, and employment for people with disabilities.

Jamie Cook, Executive Director of Inclusion International, emphasized that the congress unites self-advocates, families, supporters, and organisations globally. It fosters collaboration, connections, and shared objectives to build a more inclusive and equitable world.

At the conclusion of the opening ceremony, H.H. the Ruler of Sharjah honored sponsors, strategic partners, and supporters of the congress. He toured the exhibition halls, workshops, and pavilions, learning about activities and projects supporting individuals with disabilities, including contributions from both government and private sectors.
