About 40,000 residents across Orange County, California have been ordered to evacuate after a large storage tank at a GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove began leaking methyl methacrylate — a highly flammable and toxic chemical used in plastics production.
Officials warned the tank could either rupture and spill thousands of gallons or potentially explode, posing a major health and safety risk.
Emergency crews are working to cool and stabilize the tank, and evacuation orders span multiple cities including Garden Grove, Cypress, Anaheim, Stanton, Buena Park, and Westminster.
Authorities say the chemical can release harmful vapors that may cause respiratory issues, eye irritation, nausea and headaches, and urged residents to comply with evacuation directives. Emergency shelters have been established as crews monitor air quality and containment efforts continue.
