A major fire erupted at Viva Energy’s Geelong oil refinery in Victoria, one of only two active refineries in Australia, and burned for around 13 hours before firefighters brought it under control. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.
The refinery is a critical fuel production site, supplying nearly 50% of Victoria’s petrol needs and around 10% of Australia’s total fuel demand. The blaze has therefore raised serious concerns due to its potential impact on domestic fuel supply at a time when global energy markets are already under pressure.
Authorities have cautioned that petrol production at the facility may be disrupted for some time as damage assessments and recovery work continue. While the full extent of the impact is still being evaluated, officials warn that fuel availability could tighten in the short term.
The incident has also sparked concerns about possible increases in petrol prices if supply constraints persist, given the refinery’s significant role in Australia’s fuel network.
