A severe storm battered Victoria, Australia, triggering dangerous flooding across coastal communities, with Wye River pushed beyond capacity as surging floodwaters swept vehicles directly into the sea. Following the intense deluge on Thursday, January 15, the Kennett and Cumberland rivers were placed under emergency flood warnings as water levels rose rapidly and overflow conditions worsened.
Local authorities responded by issuing urgent shelter-in-place orders, strictly warning residents to avoid all contact with floodwaters due to the extreme danger posed by fast-moving currents. Officials highlighted that the force of the overflowing rivers created life-threatening, high-velocity flows strong enough to carry vehicles offshore.
The unprecedented rainfall severely impacted southeastern Australian coastal areas, overwhelming river systems and infrastructure, and leaving communities facing hazardous conditions as emergency measures remained in effect.
