China Coal Disaster Blast Kills 82+, Emergency Robot Rescue Underway

A massive gas explosion at the Liushenyu coal mine in Shanxi province, northern China has claimed the lives of at least 82 workers, making it the deadliest mining disaster in the country in years. The blast ripped through underground tunnels late on Friday while 247 miners were on duty, trapping many and prompting a massive rescue operation.

Emergency crews, including hundreds of rescuers and medical personnel, were dispatched after the explosion, with over 120 people hospitalized — many suffering from toxic gas exposure and serious injuries. Rescue efforts have been hampered by damaged tunnels, flooding, and confusion caused by mine blueprints that did not match the actual layout. Police have detained company executives and authorities are investigating possible safety violations by the mine operator.
