China has deployed a massive 1,300-ton undersea data center off the coast of Hainan Island, marking a major step in the country's push to support the growing demands of artificial intelligence and cloud computing. The facility, located around 35 meters beneath the sea, uses naturally cold seawater for cooling, reducing the need for traditional energy-intensive cooling systems.
Officials say the innovative design could significantly lower electricity consumption, cut operating costs, and reduce freshwater usage while improving server reliability in a sealed underwater environment. As global demand for AI computing power continues to surge, China is investing heavily in next-generation infrastructure that could reshape how future data centers are built and operated.
