Thousands of people took to the streets in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, in a powerful show of resistance against US President Donald Trump’s renewed proposals to acquire the Arctic territory. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen led the rally, with crowds chanting “Greenland NOT FOR SALE” as they marched toward the US Embassy to reject any external claims over the island.
The protest in Nuuk reflected strong local anger and determination to defend Greenland’s sovereignty, democratic self-determination, and autonomous governance rights. Demonstrators said Greenland’s future must remain in the hands of its people, stressing that the territory cannot be treated as a political or strategic asset.
At the same time, around 20,000 people demonstrated in Copenhagen, Denmark, in support of Greenland. Protesters there echoed the same message, calling for respect for international law, territorial integrity, and national dignity. Many carried signs opposing what they described as colonial-style acquisition attempts and warned against great power coercion.
According to local sentiment, around 85% of Greenlanders oppose any US territorial takeover. The rallies also highlighted concerns about Greenland’s growing importance due to its strategic Arctic positioning and increasing global interest in its natural resources, fueling what many described as a new wave of resource nationalism.
The coordinated demonstrations in Nuuk and Copenhagen underline a united defense of Greenland’s identity and sovereignty, as the issue grows into a wider geopolitical flashpoint with potential international escalation.
