Baghdad — The Iraqi Ministry of Defence has announced that Iraq has assumed complete operational control of the Ain al‑Asad Airbase in western Iraq following the full withdrawal of U.S.-led coalition forces. The base, long a central hub for American military operations in Anbar province, has been a frequent target of Iran-backed armed groups, especially during periods of heightened tension after the 2020 U.S. strike that killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.
The base has also endured multiple ballistic missile attacks, highlighting its symbolic and strategic importance in the region and its role in the U.S.–Iran confrontation.
Officials described the handover as a major milestone in Iraq’s efforts to reassert sovereignty over key military installations and reflects a progressive reduction of foreign military presence. Analysts say this move is part of a broader recalibration of Iraq’s national security architecture, strengthening the country’s control over its defense infrastructure.
