Karachi Gul Plaza Fire 26 Dead 69 Missing Rescue Operations

Post by : Bianca Haleem

KARACHI, Pakistan — Rescue teams are scouring the charred remains of Gul Plaza shopping mall on Muhammad Ali Jinnah Road, searching for survivors after a devastating fire that broke out on January 17, 2026. The blaze has claimed at least 26 lives, including a firefighter, and left 69 people missing.

The multistory complex, housing around 1,200 shops, was almost entirely destroyed. The fire raged uncontrollably for 36 hours, with structural collapses hampering rescue efforts. Officials said highly flammable garments and plastic materials, combined with inadequate ventilation, fueled the inferno.

Firefighters from Rescue 1122 battled the blaze amid extremely challenging conditions. The Sindh government has declared the incident a national tragedy and announced compensation for victims’ families. An inquiry has been ordered into the disaster, which has raised serious questions about mass disaster protocols and commercial building safety standards.

This fire is considered Karachi’s largest in a decade, highlighting critical lapses in safety measures in commercial complexes.
