A newly released video has revealed the environmental impact of an oil spill near Iran’s Shidvar Island after an attack on the Lavan refinery last month. The footage shows oil washing onto the shore of the protected nature reserve, with wildlife reportedly trapped and struggling in the polluted area. Shidvar Island, also known as Maroo Island, is an uninhabited Persian Gulf wildlife refuge and an important breeding ground for seabirds and sea turtles.
Reports say satellite images also showed an oil slick near the island after the refinery fire, raising serious concerns about ecological damage in the region.
