Eight students were rescued after being trapped for nearly four hours on the Iron Shark roller coaster at an amusement park in Galveston, Texas, when the ride malfunctioned mid-ascent and stopped about 100 feet (30.4 metres) above the ground.
Emergency crews used ladders and safety harnesses to bring the riders down one by one in a careful rescue operation. Officials confirmed that no serious injuries were reported, though the students were checked for dehydration and shock after the ordeal. Authorities said the ride’s safety systems worked as designed, and a full inspection will be carried out before the roller coaster reopens.
