The World Health Organization has declared the Ebola outbreak in DR Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, while clarifying that it does not meet the criteria of a pandemic emergency. WHO said DR Congo’s eastern Ituri province has reported 246 suspected cases and 80 suspected deaths, with confirmed cases also reported in Uganda’s capital, Kampala.
Health officials warned the outbreak could be much larger than currently detected, with serious risk of local and regional spread due to cross-border movement, insecurity and limited healthcare access. WHO said the outbreak is linked to the Bundibugyo virus, a rare Ebola strain for which there are currently no approved strain-specific vaccines or treatments.
