Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the historic Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra after Russian missile and drone strikes damaged the landmark religious site in the heart of Kyiv. The attack set parts of the nearly 1,000-year-old monastery complex aflame, with footage showing smoke and flames rising from the UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Dormition Cathedral, one of Ukraine’s most important spiritual and cultural landmarks, suffered damage to its roof, while emergency teams and church workers worked to protect religious relics, frescoes and historic items inside. The strikes also killed four people in Kyiv and injured several others, according to reports. Zelenskyy condemned the attack, calling it an assault on Ukraine’s cultural and religious heritage as the war continues to put civilian areas and historic sites at risk.
