Divorce lawyer's blunt warning on dating red flags sparks viral thread

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

A Reddit submission that circulated widely in August 2025 shared stark marriage advice attributed to a divorce lawyer — the core message: issues you accept while dating tend to resurface far worse after you marry.

The post, published in the subreddit Divorce, quoted the lawyer saying, “Everything you tolerate during dating will come back to you ten times harsher in marriage.” The remark quickly drew attention and debate online.

The warning highlights how minor annoyances, unchecked behaviours or emotional patterns often expand when couples face everyday pressures such as finances, work and family duties.

Thousands of commenters responded, many recounting personal stories of overlooking early signs and later regretting it. Several admitted they expected partners to change after marriage; others relied on love to fix problems that only grew.

Relationship professionals backed up the message, noting that marriage rarely reforms character. Therapists say patterns visible while dating usually become clearer and more consequential when partners live together and share responsibilities.

Commenters and experts alike urged open conversations before long-term commitment. Avoiding topics like money, life goals or personal boundaries during dating can set the stage for larger disputes later.

One Reddit user said they married hoping a partner’s temper would ease, only to find it intensified over the years. Another called the post “the best advice” they’d seen online, saying it prompted a major rethink of their relationship choices.

The thread reignited discussions about emotional maturity, realistic expectations and the limits of love alone. Many concluded that respect, communication and compatible behaviour matter as much as affection.

As one commenter put it: “Don’t marry the potential. Marry the person who’s actually in front of you.”
