South Korea recorded a sharp rise in exports in the first 20 days of March, supported by strong global demand, especially for semiconductors.
According to data released by the Korea Customs Service, the country’s exports reached $53.3 billion between March 1 and March 20. This marks a 50.4% increase compared to $35.4 billion during the same period last year. It is also the highest export figure ever recorded for this period.
Imports also grew during this time, rising 19.7% year-on-year to $41.2 billion. As a result, South Korea posted a trade surplus of $12.1 billion.
On a daily average basis, exports climbed 40.4% compared to last year, reaching $3.55 billion per day.
The growth was mainly driven by the semiconductor sector. Chip exports surged by 163.9% year-on-year, hitting a record $18.7 billion for the first 20 days of the month. This is the highest level ever recorded for this period.
The strong performance in semiconductor exports was supported by rising memory chip prices and increasing global demand, especially from artificial intelligence (AI) server markets.
The data highlights South Korea’s strong export momentum, led by its key technology sector.
