Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, met with Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, in New York. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80). It marked an important step in strengthening relations between the two countries and exploring new opportunities for cooperation.

Attendance By Officials

The meeting was also attended by Sean Sobers, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago. His presence highlighted the importance of the discussions and added momentum to the growing ties between both nations. With leaders and senior officials present, the meeting was positioned to deliver practical outcomes and pave the way for deeper cooperation.

Signing Of Visa Exemption Agreement

One of the key outcomes of the meeting was the signing of an agreement on the mutual exemption of entry visa requirements. The agreement was signed by H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sean Sobers. It reflects a shared commitment to make travel between the UAE and Trinidad and Tobago easier and more efficient for citizens of both countries.

Details Of The Visa Waiver

Under the agreement, UAE citizens holding diplomatic, special, ordinary, and “mission” passports will be exempt from the visa requirement when entering Trinidad and Tobago. Similarly, holders of diplomatic and official passports from Trinidad and Tobago will be exempt from visas when traveling to the UAE. This mutual exemption is expected to boost travel and promote stronger people-to-people connections.

Benefits Of The Agreement

The visa exemption will not only facilitate smoother travel but also enhance economic, trade, cultural, and tourism links. Easier entry requirements encourage business leaders, investors, and professionals to explore opportunities in both countries. It also supports tourism by making travel more attractive and convenient for visitors. The agreement is expected to strengthen bilateral engagement across multiple sectors.

Discussions On Bilateral Relations

Beyond the visa waiver, Sheikh Abdullah and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar discussed the overall state of friendly relations between their nations. They explored ways to enhance cooperation across economic, trade, and investment fields. Both sides emphasized the importance of building long-term partnerships that can support mutual growth and prosperity.

Cooperation In Trade And Investment

The meeting placed special focus on trade and investment opportunities. The UAE is a global hub for commerce, finance, and logistics, while Trinidad and Tobago has a strong position in the Caribbean, especially in energy and natural resources. By working together, both countries can open new doors for businesses and strengthen economic ties in mutually beneficial ways.

UN General Assembly Agenda

The leaders also reviewed pressing international issues that are on the agenda of the UN General Assembly. These included topics of global peace, sustainable development, and cooperation among nations. Both sides stressed the need for multilateralism and the importance of dialogue in addressing global challenges.

UAE’s Commitment To Partnership

Sheikh Abdullah reaffirmed the UAE’s keenness to deepen relations with Trinidad and Tobago. He underlined that the UAE seeks to build partnerships that foster economic cooperation and shared development. This approach reflects the UAE’s broader foreign policy, which focuses on building bridges of friendship and supporting global prosperity.

Towards Stronger Future Relations

The meeting and the signing of the visa exemption agreement mark the beginning of a stronger chapter in UAE–Trinidad and Tobago relations. With easier travel, enhanced economic cooperation, and mutual commitment to development, both nations are setting the stage for a lasting partnership. The agreements and discussions held in New York are expected to yield tangible benefits for the peoples of both countries.
