A catastrophic landfill collapse in the central Philippines has resulted in four fatalities, with rescue teams striving to locate numerous missing workers under hazardous circumstances.
The tragedy unfolded on Thursday at the Binaliw landfill in Cebu City, where a substantial heap of waste unexpectedly gave way. Approximately 110 workers were present during the incident, resulting in several structures being buried under tonnes of debris.
Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival reported on Saturday that four workers have lost their lives, and at least 12 others sustained injuries requiring hospital care. Currently, 36 individuals are unaccounted for, although officials noted that these figures are still being assessed.
Families of the missing have congregated near the scene, holding onto the hope that their loved ones might still be discovered alive. One woman expressed her despair, stating that she had not received any updates regarding her husband since the disaster but remained hopeful.
Rescue operations have proven difficult due to the precarious debris, twisted metal, and highly flammable waste materials. Teams from various emergency services are meticulously navigating the ruins. Authorities noted that signs of life have been detected in certain sections, prompting the use of a heavy 50-ton crane under police supervision to aid in the recovery efforts.
Safety protocols around the site have been intensified, pointing to grave dangers for rescuers from unstable refuse and hazardous gases. Access to the area is now heavily restricted to prevent additional accidents.
The victims included an engineer and a female office worker, both employed at the landfill. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the cause of the immense garbage mound’s collapse. A witness indicated that the event transpired suddenly, without any forewarning despite stable weather conditions.
Rescue operations continue urgently, with the hope persisting that more survivors might still be retrieved from the debris.
