The Emergence of a Unique Talent.
Rouen, Normandy — a locale where the mist from the English Channel meets the timeless stones of Gothic architecture. It was here that Fabien Marchand first encountered the intricate dance of light and shadow, well before ever picking up a paintbrush. “Growing up near the sea, surrounded by history, was instrumental in my artistic awakening,” he shares, his tone mirroring the serenity of his surroundings. “Perhaps it was during school trips to the gardens of Versailles that art’s deeper essence began to resonate with me.”
Raised within a humble family that valued intellectual curiosity, Marchand's first influences were not notable artists but two uncles whose paint-smeared hands ignited a passion within him. “Visiting their studio was like stepping into a new realm — colors, tools, and materials all whispered stories waiting to unfold,” he recalls.
This initial exposure shaped his artistic trajectory. “While I didn’t undergo formal training in fine arts,” he admits with a smile, “my education was derived from my inquisitiveness, literature, and discussions. Art became my secondary language, transcending the clamor of daily life.”
Fabien's formative years were filled with the joys of discovery — cycling, swimming, and building makeshift structures, all underpinned by a growing fascination with rhythm and sound. “My first love was music,” he explains. “It moves much like color — it creates vivid atmospheres in space.”
He later learned that the marriage of melody and motion would always inform his visual artistry. Recalling his first painting, he chuckles, “It was a small abstract piece with a Naples yellow backdrop and aubergine forms. Even then, my goal was to find a balance between simplicity and emotion. That canvas still adorns my in-laws’ wall, my initial conversation between instinct and intellect.”
When discussing his artistic style, Fabien Marchand shuns confinement. “I refuse to be boxed in,” he asserts. “Defining a style would be like building a cage around my creativity.” Every artwork he creates is a defiance against monotony — a spontaneous leap into freedom. “People often tell me, ‘You’ve altered your style.’ I respond, ‘No, I remain untethered.’”
His creative journey starts paradoxically with a black backdrop. “From darkness, color is conceived,” he explains. “Black is the silence before the symphony.” Intuition follows, releasing a flurry of emotional brushstrokes. “Reflection transforms into movement, and from movement, freedom emerges.”
Each tool, be it oil, acrylic, knife, or brush, acts as an extension of his essence. “Each knife and brush is like an old companion that knows the nuance of my touch,” he explains.
His artworks radiate kinetic energy — vibrant colors in perpetual motion. “Movement and energy encapsulate my art,” he observes. “They communicate the life force within the human soul.”
Critics often label Fabien Marchand a poet in color. He states, “Color embodies emotion and memory.” The hues of blue, yellow, and black are not merely pigments but entities in their own right. “When I embark on a new collection, the color palette comes first. The interactions and contrasts lay the foundation for emotion to blossom.”
Seasons, vistas, and the sea consistently emerge within his art. “The sea speaks a universal language offering tranquility,” he muses. “In winter and autumn, I work in the cozy solitude of my studio; in summer, my watercolors accompany me to the beach. Nature’s cadence becomes my guide.”
Unlike many peers pursuing digital realms, Fabien treasures the tactile essence of paint and canvas. “Digital lacks the scent of turpentine and the feel of texture. It’s all about experiencing with your senses, painting must be experienced, not viewed on a screen.”
While independence defines Fabien’s solo adventure, Atelier Marchand represents his collaborative evolution. His partnership with brother Olivier becomes an artistic synergy. “Together, we become a third entity that exists apart from our individual selves.”
Their inaugural exhibition at a friend's restaurant, La Gannerie, was a revelation — lots of canvases, countless visitors, and sales that changed their trajectory. “That day was pivotal,” he reflects. “To watch strangers connect with our art was to feel another heartbeat.”
The duo’s art has since ventured well beyond France — to Ecuador, where their canvases journeyed through cities they had yet to discover. “It’s miraculous to think someone far away might connect with your brushstroke,” he adds.
Today, Fabien collaborates with artists from Germany, Tunisia, and Mali, propelling the Atelier Marchand ethos into an international movement. “Co-creating stimulates me,” he states. “It’s an exchange of passions while honoring our uniqueness. Art flourishes through dialogue.”
As the first French artist selected for Dubai’s A50 initiative under ArtDomain, Fabien Marchand symbolizes a fusion of European heritage and Middle Eastern creativity. “It’s both an honor and a hurdle,” he expresses gratefully. “Representing France among fifty global artists signifies that art speaks the most universal language of all.”
According to him, art transcends spoken language. “A painting can be understood worldwide,” he asserts. “Its syntax consists of color, motion, and quietude.”
His intrigue with dualities — silence and motion, brightness and shade, time and eternity — encapsulates his current artistic phase. “Time is limitless,” he reflects. “Waves are its rhythmic powers. Portraying them allows one to delve into that exhilarating chaos — the essence of being alive.”
He embraces Dubai not merely as a hub of design but as an emblem of human aspiration. “To engage with the Middle East is to embrace the future,” he believes.
Beyond technique and acclaim, Marchand’s true legacy is his humanism. “Art serves as a conduit for peace,” he reflects. “Much like music, it calms the spirit.” His guiding principles can be distilled into three concepts: Reflection. Eclecticism. Sensitivity.
When inquiring about the emotions he aspires to evoke through his art, he answers immediately: “Surprise! It’s life's purest response. Surprise hits instinctively, communicating straight to the heart, bypassing the brain.”
And should his art be showcased in a museum for future generations? Fabien smiles, his humility evident. “I’d wish the inscription to read simply: Enjoy your experience. Because that’s what art grants: a moment suspended between the observer and eternity.
The Cyclical Nature of Creation
For Fabien Marchand, creativity knows no closure. Each finished piece signals the inception of the next. “Completing a painting isn’t an end,” he explains. “It’s a pledge towards the upcoming creation.”
In this unending discovery filled with discipline and wonder, Marchand is more than just an artist; he’s a philosopher of freedom, one who paints not to confine life but to liberate it.
From Normandy’s ethereal fog to the vibrant skyline of Dubai, his journey exemplifies that art serves as the truest passport to infinity.
