Abu Dhabi has officially introduced a pivotal Sustainable Fisheries Policy, spearheaded by Decree No. (8) of 2025 from His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This initiative signifies a monumental step in the emirate's dedication to preserving its marine environment while bolstering the fishing industry.
The main objective of the policy is to achieve enduring sustainability of fish populations, drive economic growth, and encourage scientific advancements in fisheries management. This move comes as fish stocks show signs of recovery, benefitting from the ongoing regulatory measures implemented by the EAD to harmonize ecological conservation with the requirements of the fishing sector.
Core elements of the policy feature the scientific governance of fisheries, enhanced monitoring systems, crafting of fishing-related laws, and backing for sustainable aquaculture ventures. Additionally, it highlights the restoration of natural habitats such as coral reefs and mangroves, ensuring local ecosystems can withstand environmental pressures.
Significantly, the initiative focuses on empowering local fishermen by advocating sustainable fishing practices and encouraging a responsible approach to marine resource use. This strategy aims to protect endemic species from overfishing, preserve biodiversity, and sustain healthy marine food chains while enhancing the sector's role in food security and economic prosperity.
By merging regulatory measures, community involvement, and environmental responsibility, Abu Dhabi’s Sustainable Fisheries Policy unveils a holistic approach to safeguarding the emirate's rich marine heritage for future generations.
