Paige Greco, a distinguished Australian Paralympic champion and para-cyclist, has tragically passed away at just 28 years old. Renowned for securing Australia’s inaugural gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, her sudden death on Sunday in Adelaide was attributed to a medical episode, as reported by AusCycling, Australia’s national cycling body.
Her family expressed profound sorrow while also honoring her remarkable life. Natalie Greco, Paige’s mother, shared, "Paige was our everything. Her strength, compassion, and warmth were constants in our lives. While we are heartbroken, we take immense pride in her representation of Australia and her remarkable spirit."
Born with cerebral palsy, Paige’s athletic journey commenced in track and field before transitioning to para-cycling in 2018. Her incredible talent and relentless dedication quickly brought her to global prominence, earning multiple World Championship titles and medals in para-cycling competitions.
At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, she made history by breaking the world record in the C1–3 3,000m individual pursuit, a thrilling event where cyclists compete head-to-head. In addition to her gold medal, Greco garnered bronze in both the C1-3 road race and time trial, highlighting her exceptional versatility and stamina.
Regrettably, Paige could not compete in the selection rounds for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games due to health concerns. Nonetheless, she triumphed in her return to elite competition, clinching a bronze medal at the 2025 Para-cycling World Championships in Belgium for the C3 road race.
Following her passing, heartfelt tributes from the sports community poured in. Marne Fechner, CEO of AusCycling, described her as "an extraordinary athlete with remarkable achievements, but more importantly, she positively impacted everyone around her with her spirited attitude."
Cameron Murray, CEO of Paralympics Australia, commended her remarkable character and contributions, stating, "Paige’s international achievements were unparalleled, yet it was her kindness and uplifting spirit that will resonate with us. Her ability to make everyone feel valued and supported will leave a significant legacy."
Paige Greco’s inspirational journey has touched the hearts of many Australians and athletes globally. Her unwavering dedication, resilience, and success in para-cycling will be cherished forever. Beyond her accolades, her kindness and encouragement made her a treasured figure within sports and her community.
The loss of Paige Greco is a heartbreaking event for Australia and the broader para-sports community. She will be remembered not only for her remarkable achievements on the track and road but also for embodying the kindness and bravery that resonated throughout her life. Her enduring legacy will inspire future generations of athletes.
