Google has introduced several new tools to help students study better using artificial intelligence (AI). These tools are part of a feature called AI Mode, which is designed to make learning easier and more interactive. With this update, students can prepare for exams, complete homework, and explore topics more deeply by talking with AI, using pictures, or pointing their phone camera at problems they need help with.
Create Your Own Study Guides Easily
One of the most helpful features is the ability to create your own study guides using AI. Students can highlight or drag important information from websites or documents directly into a sidebar on their screen. After adding the content, they can ask the AI more questions about it. This helps them understand the topic better and makes their study process more effective. Instead of just reading, students can interact with the material and get clear answers.
Ask Questions Using Pictures
Google now allows users to upload images to AI Mode on desktop. This means students can take a picture of something they don't understand—like a math problem or a science diagram—and ask the AI questions about it. For example, if a student is stuck on a tricky geometry problem, they can upload the image and ask the AI for help solving it. This can also be used for other subjects. If someone finds a plant and wants to know its name, they can upload a picture of it and get more information.
Camera Sharing for Real-Time Help
Google is also testing a new tool that works in real time using the phone's camera. This feature is based on Google’s existing Search Live tool. It allows users to point their camera at something they want help with and talk to the AI by asking a question aloud. So, instead of typing, users can speak their question directly while the AI looks at the image through the camera. This tool is currently available only in the United States for users who have joined the AI Mode Labs experiment, which is a testing program for new AI features.
Improved Lens Tool in Chrome
Another big improvement is in Google Chrome, the web browser. Google is making it easier for users to ask questions about any web page. Now, when someone clicks on the address bar, a new option appears: “Ask Google about this page.” When this is selected, a special tool will open on the side of the browser. Users can then highlight any part of the page they are curious about, and AI will give a simple explanation or summary.
This tool uses Google Lens, which is already popular for recognizing images and objects. What’s new is that users can now ask follow-up questions using AI Mode. There is also a button called “Dive deeper” that lets users keep asking related questions and explore more details right from the same place.
AI Mode Built into Google Search
Back in May, Google made AI Mode a key part of its Search function in the US. When someone uses Google Search now, the AI can read the web and show a summary of the results at the top of the screen. Instead of clicking many links, users can quickly understand the main points. They can also ask more questions to get clearer answers. The system allows for a back-and-forth conversation, similar to chatting with a smart tutor.
Desktop Version Helps with Homework
In April, Google started testing the ability to upload images into AI Mode, but only for certain users. Now, this tool is being added to desktop computers, which will help students do school projects or assignments more easily. They no longer have to search for answers by typing long questions. They can simply upload a picture of the problem and start asking questions about it. This saves time and helps them get the right answers faster.
More Interactive Learning for Everyone
These new features show how Google is trying to make learning smarter and simpler. Whether it’s by creating custom study guides, using the camera to ask questions, or chatting with the AI about a website, students now have more ways to learn. The tools are made to help people of all ages understand better, not just memorize facts.
Focus on US Users First
Right now, some of these features are being tested only for users in the United States, especially those who have signed up for AI Mode Labs. But Google may make them available in more countries over time. The company is using this testing period to see how helpful the tools are and how students use them in real situations.
Designed for Smarter Learning
Google’s goal is clear: they want to use technology to support education. The AI Mode is designed to be a helpful partner for students. By letting them talk to AI, upload pictures, and explore deeper questions, learning becomes less stressful and more interactive. These tools are meant to help not only with schoolwork but also with everyday curiosity—like understanding the world better through technology.
