A 25-year-old passenger was arrested at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Saturday, September 27, after smoking in the lavatory of a flight, which caused panic among fellow passengers. The incident occurred on a Phuket-Mumbai flight on Friday when smoke was noticed coming from the aircraft lavatory, alarming passengers and crew alike.
Passenger Identified
The man, identified as Bhavya Gautam Jain, a resident of Napeansea Road in South Mumbai, reportedly lit a cigarette inside the plane. Officials said that passengers immediately noticed the smoke and informed the cabin crew, leading to quick action to ensure the safety of everyone on board.
Arrest And Legal Action
Upon arrival at Mumbai airport, authorities took Jain into custody. He was arrested under relevant sections of the Aircraft Act, which strictly prohibits smoking on all passenger flights. Aviation authorities emphasized that such actions are considered serious offenses and are punishable under Indian aviation law.
Previous Similar Incidents
This is not the first time a passenger has been arrested for smoking on a flight. Last month, a 28-year-old man, Sheikh Mohammed from Thanjavur, was detained after allegedly smoking in the lavatory on an IndiGo flight from Kuwait to Chennai. Cabin crew reported the smoke to Chennai Air Traffic Control, and Mohammed was handed over to the police after landing.
Safety Concerns On Aircraft
Smoking inside aircraft lavatories poses a significant safety risk, not only due to the possibility of fire but also because it can trigger alarms and cause panic among passengers. Authorities stressed the importance of adhering to aviation rules to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone on board.
Enforcement Of Aviation Rules
Officials reiterated that aviation safety rules are strictly enforced in India. Passengers who violate regulations, including smoking on flights, can face severe penalties, including arrest and prosecution. These measures aim to maintain safety standards and prevent any potential accidents or emergencies.
Ongoing Investigation
Bhavya Gautam Jain remains in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities are reviewing the circumstances of the incident, including passenger statements and flight crew reports, to determine the appropriate legal action and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The arrest of Bhavya Gautam Jain highlights the strict enforcement of aviation safety rules in India. Authorities continue to warn passengers that smoking on flights is a serious offense and will be met with legal consequences. Passengers are urged to comply with regulations to ensure their own safety and that of others.
