India Successfully Tests Agni-Prime Missile From Rail Launcher

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

India on Thursday successfully launched the Agni-Prime missile, an intermediate-range ballistic missile, from a specially designed rail-based mobile launcher. The test was carried out by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), marking a major milestone in India’s missile technology development.

Next-Generation Missile

The Agni-Prime is an advanced intermediate-range missile that will replace older Agni variants in this range. It is designed to cover a distance of up to 2,000 kilometres, enhancing India’s strategic deterrence capabilities. The missile incorporates state-of-the-art technology, including lighter weight materials and improved guidance systems.

Rail-Based Mobile Launcher

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the launch as “first-of-its-kind” due to the innovative rail-based mobile launcher used. This system allows the missile to be launched while moving on a rail network, increasing operational flexibility and survivability during strategic operations.

Significance of the Test

The successful test places India among a select group of nations capable of developing a canisterised launch system from an on-the-move rail network. This capability demonstrates India’s growing expertise in modern missile deployment strategies and advanced defence technology.

Acknowledgement of DRDO and Armed Forces

Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO, Strategic Forces Command (SFC), and Armed Forces for the success. He highlighted the teamwork and expertise required to design and execute a test of this complexity. The launch demonstrates India’s commitment to strengthening its national security and defence preparedness.

Strategic Impact

The Agni-Prime missile enhances India’s intermediate-range deterrence and provides a modern replacement for older Agni missiles. Its deployment will allow for flexible, rapid-response capability in case of any security threat, reinforcing India’s strategic defence posture.

Technology Highlights

The missile features improved guidance, accuracy, and manoeuvrability. The rail-based launch system allows mobility, making it harder for adversaries to track or target the missile before launch. These advancements underscore India’s growing capability in missile innovation and strategic systems.

The successful launch of Agni-Prime is expected to lead to further refinements and integration into India’s Strategic Forces Command. Continued development of mobile launch platforms and next-generation missile systems will strengthen India’s position in global defence technology.

The Agni-Prime missile test from a rail-based launcher marks a major achievement for India’s defence sector. With its advanced technology, long-range capability, and innovative deployment method, the missile demonstrates India’s commitment to enhancing national security and strategic deterrence in the region.
