While visiting India for the ICC Women’s World Cup, two Australian women cricketers experienced an alarming incident in Indore on Thursday. As they walked from their hotel to a nearby café, they encountered a disturbing situation. The players quickly alerted their team security, which led to immediate intervention by local authorities.
Following the event, Danny Simmons, the security manager for the Australian team, lodged a report with the MIG police station later that evening. Local police acted promptly, filing a First Information Report (FIR) and initiating an inquiry to guarantee the safety of the players and apprehend the suspect.
Sub-Inspector Nidhi Raghuvanshi stated that the two athletes were approached by a motorcyclist while on Khajrana Road. The individual allegedly made inappropriate contact with one of the players before fleeing the scene. The players swiftly reached out to their security officer for help.
In coordination with local officials, Danny Simmons ensured that assistance was dispatched. Assistant Commissioner of Police Himani Mishra met with the affected players, documented their accounts, and facilitated an expedited investigation. The FIR was filed under relevant sections addressing criminal force and stalking of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
A vigilant bystander noted the motorcycle's registration number, aiding in the capture of Aqeel Khan, the suspect. Police reports indicate that Khan has a history of prior offenses, and further inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
The Australian players are currently based at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Indore, accompanied by their entire team. Enhanced security measures are being put in place to ensure their protection during the tournament.
Authorities have stated that decisive actions are being undertaken to maintain accountability. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage, gathering witness testimonials, and collaborating with the Australian team to avert such occurrences in the future. The case underscores the significance of prompt action and cooperation between team security and local law enforcement.
Officials have confirmed that the investigation remains active, with potential follow-up questioning for the accused and any accomplices. Legal actions are anticipated to progress without delay, aiming for justice for the players and to enhance safety protocols for visiting sports teams.
