Green Roofs in Saudi Cities: Is Greening Possible in the Desert

Post by : Shakul

As Saudi Arabia’s cities undergo rapid development, there is a growing emphasis on sustainability alongside expansion. The Kingdom has taken a new step in its environmental journey by promoting green roofs as an integral part of urban planning.

On 11 February 2026, Saudi Green Building Alliance was officially launched in Riyadh. The initiative aims to make buildings and cities low-carbon, climate-resilient, and more livable, in line with the goals of Vision 2030 and the c Green Initiative.

Experts say green rooftops are not just decorative features but a form of urban infrastructure. They help reduce heat in cities, improve energy efficiency, and create healthier, more comfortable environments for residents. In cities like Riyadh, where summer temperatures often exceed 45°C, green roofs can play a key role in reducing the urban heat-island effect.

There is a common belief that green roofs are not feasible in desert climates, but new technologies and design solutions are challenging this assumption. The use of drought-tolerant plants, lightweight soil systems, drip irrigation, and non-potable water reuse has made rooftop greening increasingly viable even in arid regions.

The benefits of green roofs go beyond temperature control. They support biodiversity, provide habitats for pollinators such as bees and butterflies, and create wellbeing spaces for communities. For developers, green roofs can also deliver long-term advantages through energy savings, extended building lifespan, and increased property value.

Looking ahead, the Saudi Green Building Alliance plans to develop climate-specific guidelines for arid regions, establish demonstration rooftops, and build local expertise. With the right planning and investment, Saudi Arabia’s rooftops could transform into gardens and cooling systems by 2030—proving that even in the desert, cities can grow greener.
